Woodend Cottage: The Bungalow

Seven years ago saw the start of an epic adventure concerning a mother of three and her dream of a fully sustainable, environmentally approved, self sufficient smallholding. Now the whole family, locals and guests are reaping the rewards as fresh fruit, vegetables, the finest eggs, lamb, turkeys and the odd chicken provide an all year round larder for those near enough to buy fresh products selected the day they are eaten.

Every year sees a change, whether its the weather bringing on an early fruits harvest, an epidemic of rabbits cheating us out of lettuces and broccoli, a young lamb that has escaped from its paddock or rescuing a little turkey chick whose trapped behind his enclosure. There is always plenty going on.

PV Panels and plans for a wind turbine provide the perfect example of sustainable energy in action. Recycling of all materials is encouraged, plus the opportunity to start new habits; we encourage the use of local butchers, grocers and to turn away from plastic bags and shop with material re-usable shopping bags provided. This dedication to green living has been recognised by the Green Tourism Business Scheme who have awarded Woodend a Silver award.

It is always a pleasure to be able to show our guests around the small holding. The gardens now boast a hugely impressive stock of vegetables, a huge variety of fruit, and an ever growing flock of the most free-est of free range chickens. Depending on the seasons, we offer for sale our organic produce, plus jars of honey and delicious jams and chutneys made by Mary Woodhouse. Mary is also keen to pass on her extensive knowledge and would be pleased to give lessons in: growing fruit and vegetables, gardening, jam-making, and keeping chickens and sheep. Please contact us for further details.
